Lowlines are an Australian breed that was developed as part of a beef research initiative in the 1970s and have been on the market in Australia since 1993. They were introduced into the US in 1997.
Some interesting facts to know about Lowlines:

• Lowlines are a small breed, about 2/3 the size of the normal Aberdeen Angus, from which they were derived. Lowline cows typically average in the 500-700 lb range and measure 40-45 inches at the hip. A mature bull is approximately 800-1100 lbs.
• Full-blood Lowlines have attractive proportions and mature early.
• Traditionally people raise Lowlines because of the superior beef they produce. Lowline beef is consistently tender, well marbled and flavorful.
• Due to a high stocking rate (number of animals per acre), the Lowlines have proven to produce considerably more beef yield per acre than full size cattle. More beef per acre equates to lower production costs and more profit.
• They naturally polled and are docile, easy to handle animals.
• They are an ideal breed for the small acreage ranch or family farm.
• Lowline births are mostly unassisted and the dams have strong maternal instincts. They are excellent mothers.
• Lowlines do not carry the dwarfism (Achondroplasia) gene and therefore there is no risk of genetically generated deformity.
  

Lowlines have been bred for years to finish on grass and produce a naturally lean meat. This is very important because of the health benefits of naturally raised foods. Research has shown that cattle finished on a 100% grass based diet will produce meat that is much higher in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A & E and beta-carotene. These nutrients are recommended for a healthy heart, cancer prevention and to enhance short-term memory.

Lowlines are a marvelous breed and offer an excellent value for seedstock producers to meet the current demand for breeding animals. Fullblood cattle can be registered through the American Lowline Registry after DNA testing to assure purity.
